Real Estate & Renovation Advisor

I studied engineering at the U.S. Naval Academy and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for six years before earning my MBA from Northwestern University (Kellogg). I had a career in finance, strategy and M&A before I took up real estate investing.  After I completed my first project, I realized that I loved the creative process of turning an old home into something re-imagined that was also financially rewarding.  The combination of my engineering background and my experience in corporate finance as well as my experience buying and renovating homes means you’ll have a trusted advisor by your side during this process.

I work with clients across a variety of projects::

  • Investment property advisor: purchase and renovation advice for flipping or preparing an investment property for the rental market.  Financial modeling for properties based on your goals with the experience of several real-life examples from my own investing.  Each time I’ve done this I’ve learned and now I’m ready to help you with your project.
  • Property manager and/or advisor: ensuring that your property is well maintained and keeps your tenants happy while you make prudent preventative maintenance choices for your investing time horizon.  I also offer services to ensure your property is under a watchful eye if you travel for extended periods of time (regular inspections to ensure there are no leaks or other maintenance issues)
  • Renovation scoping & planning: turning a wish list into a sequenced, budgeted scope of work before the first wall comes down.  Allows you to enter the process eyes wide open for what you may learn once you start demolition.  Experienced advice on what the key renovation elements should be part of your plan for your lifestyle or investment goals.
  • On-site renovation oversight: the person that should care most about your renovation project should be you!  Often contractors miss the opportunity to advise you of a timely change for one of your construction details.  Regular site visits means that you can respond to issues that come up quickly with thoughtful solutions, saving you both time and money.  If you don’t have the time to visit your job regularly, I can help.
Why advising during renovation matters

The best time to make a decision about plumbing, wiring, or insulation is well before the walls are already open.  Critical decisions about making an old home more modern (connectivity, home automation, built in sound) take place in the early stages of planning.  Any decision to upgrade after the walls are closed back up lead to much higher costs, fewer choices and less optimal outcomes.

That's the case for having an advisor in the room, not just at closing. It's almost always cheaper to do it right the first time than to do it twice, and having someone there who understands both the construction and the numbers means the calls made in the moment are the ones that hold up in the appraisal, the inspection, and the rent roll a year later.
